A long long time ago, I somehow discovered this 'little' band called Arctic Monkeys. There was something very gritty and unpolished about their sound that I LOVED. Never mind I couldn't understand half their songs because of their accents but I just absolutely adored their sound.
My friends can attest to my love for Arctic Monkeys, for about 2-3 years, every time they'll get into my car, Arctic Monkeys would be playing. This again, can't you play something else? No I replied. This is what we're listening to, again.
Eventually my die-hard obsession weaken, their music on a back burner while I was pre-occupied with other things(hint:pretty korean boys). Then at the end of last year there was some buzz about this new Arctic Monkeys single. I haven't heard from this band in years so curiosity got the best of me. Thinking nothing off it, I fired up You Tube and search for this new single. That was 'R U Mine'.
Blown away was an understatement. Holy hell I don't know what happened during the years I stopped following them but gone was their signature rough sounds, this-this was so fucking suave. It was sexy, it was smooth. Sure it was a huge departure from their old sounds but damm it I wholeheartedly welcome this departure. A departure that I fully embraced with open arms.
'AM' dropped after that. A whole album full of sexy cooing by front man Alex Turner. Of course I fell in love all over again. To my great delight they soon announced a Auckland gig for May 2. Just before my birthday as well. How could I not attend?
Unfortunately I didn't get GA tickets, had a test on the same night and had no one to go with. But those where just short comings really, not when I finally had the chance see the freaking band I was in love with for so long. Admittedly the whole going to the concert solo kinda dimmed the experience a little, especially when everyone else went with a friend or a group of friends whilst I stand alone in the corner by my self. Seriously I sat in the corner and the seats on both sides of me were empty. But it didn't matter as soon as the show started.
The show was schedule to start at 8pm so I had to rush down to Vector Arena from University after my test. However the band didn't come on stage until 9:30pm. There was an opening act 'Pond' but I only caught the last 3 minutes or so of their performance. When the Arctic Monkeys did come out however, the crowd cheers were defeaning. They play a lot of their new songs from 'AM' like Arabella, One For the Road, Fireside, Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High, R U Mine, Do I Wanna Know. But there were also old favourites like Fluorescent Adolescent, Dancing Shoes. There was also I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor which Alex said was for this girls. Though there was at least 3 songs that night for this girls. Not that any of the girls minded, certainly not this girl.
I have to say, as much as I loved the songs from the new album, it was definitely the older songs that made me truly ecstatic. Songs that I had on repeat over and over again during my teenage years, being able to hear them play it live was just overwhelming nostalgic. Ha! See how clever I am, tying this post to my blog name?
